AUGUST's Rae Armour recently performed a solo hour at Nadine Davenport's Grrrls with Guitars showcase at Rime, 1130 Commercial Drive, Vancouver. Also performing was Sara Ciantar. Some highlights of Rae's show: a duet with Leslie Alexander; a song with Meg Tennant and Beverley Elliott; and Rae singing one of Linda Kidder's songs. Thanks to all of you who attended AUGUST'S “Shoulda Coulda Woulda” concert at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Linda, Beverley, Meg, and I enjoyed sharing our music and laughter with you. You were such an appreciative audience! A special thank you to Carol, Leslie, and David who drove in from Salmon Arm to be there.

It's a dream come true for the four of us to be sharing the stage together. In fact, we'd like to tour "Shoulda Coulda Woulda" around B.C. and other parts of Canada. Who da....are these women? was the first question that entered my mind when I came to see this concert. I found out that these are four independent recording artists who decided to come together. after years of solo careers.

They're funny and entertaining. They sing all kinds of songs: folk songs, country songs, songs that reminded me of Joan Baez and those hippy years. Even songs a capella style!

I enjoyed the VISA song sang by Kidder, a satire of a woman who had to buy something even though she didn't have any money. It was sung in the Calypso style (with the Jamaican accent), and those old credit card machines were used by the other three for percussion.

(Tennant) was the more lyrical one, singing of Buddy who coulda've been her husband as she sang of his footsteps in the beach returning to hopefully give her the diamond ring.

The really funny one that got the audience howling was the song about being fat sung by Elliott. She made a few quips asking who in the audience were overweight, and a few cheered and raised their hands. She sang about the thin bitch who wouldn't comment whether she lost a pound or two.

The group felt comfortable with the audience, and the audience, likewise. The hour and a half concert (with an intermission in-between) was a delightful and entertaining one. CDs of their recordings were on sale.

Shoulda Coulda Woulda

What do you do with four fabulous women who love music, life, adventure, and each other? Knitting, cooking, or starting a book club, all equally rewarding and oh so briefly considered, were immediately forgotten, lost in the shuffle of lyrics, music charts, e-mails and daytime planners. Juggling music, motherhood, careers and chaos has become old hat for these gals.

Ian Forsythe, the Arts Services Manager for the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, first heard Beverley, Meg, Linda, and Rae when they performed together at the Outrageous Women’s Cabaret-9 in June of this year. He graciously and on the spot invited them back to do an entire show of their own.

They are grateful for the opportunity and have planned a fantastic show with a diverse set of self-penned tunes touching on subjects such as mothers, cheaters, weight problems, spending money we don't have, and love! So sit back, relax, enjoy. What do YOU wish you shoulda, coulda, woulda done?

Female Musicians Join Forces to Create a Band Called August

Beverley Elliot and Rae Armour consider themselves late bloomers. The women, who admit to being somewhere between the ages of 45 and 60, met 15 years ago in Vancouver's musical circuit, playing cover tunes at dingy bars sometimes six nights a week.

Individually both had carved out semi-professional careers in the competitive industry, but it took nearly two decades before they decided to join forces and create August.

A few years back the duo were sitting on blankets at the Vancouver Folk Festival with a mutual friend and artist, Meg Tennant, soaking in the independent music.

Despite careers, motherhood and mortgage payments, none of the women had lost their passion for creating song. They had, however, lost some motivation. All were unsure of where they were heading musically, then Armour had an epiphany.

"Why don't we sing together?"

Elliot had always believed people were stronger in numbers. It created more opportunities. So they made the merger.

"Now there's three of us looking for work rather than one," Elliot muses.

Together their voices created harmony in their individual songs. Their lyrics became a balance of universal themes reflecting on everything from menopause or weight-loss issues to finding the "right path."

Comfortable with the direction their music was taking, they found it difficult to come up with a band name that would express their mature, yet light-hearted style. It took two years of scouring through dictionary definitions before they came across a not-so-unusual noun: august.

"It actually stands for a woman who knows who she is and has strength of character," says Armour.

"Things ripen and mature in August," adds Elliot. "And we're women of a certain age."

With age the women have learned to celebrate life's challenges. They've experienced spiritual awakenings, heart breaks and love and learned to how to dance through it all. This wisdom has also affected how they write music.

"There was a time when I couldn't even write a song unless I was in the emotional gutter," says Armour. "Now I can write a song about body odour."

Some choose not to acknowledge the truth while others will deny it vociferously but it doesn't change things a whit: Vancouver, much loved jewel-by-the-sea, is a Lower Mainland divided. There is over here: Kits, the West Side and the rolling Burb Lands out to Langley and the valley and there is over there: North and West Van….they also get the Harmony Arts Festival. This is the arts lover’s dream: a festival with film, music, visual arts and theatre components…along various perfect little venues by the lapping seaside…

…This will be the first year at Harmony Arts for the trio AUGUST, made up of veteran Vancouver singer/songwriters Rae Armour, Meg Tennant and Beverley Elliott. I actually saw them performing early on at the Merritt Fest this year and they were great, the harmonies pristine.

I’ve known Beverley Elliott since the ‘80s when she first amazed me at how easily she combined a music and acting career. On one hand she’s appeared on innumerable TV shows like The X-Files and Bordertown and movies. When Clint Eastwood won his Oscar for Unforgiven, Elliott was one of the people he thanked in his speech.

On the other, she’s a recording artist who’s released numerous singles and an album, Yellow Dress, through the years. She, Armour and Tennant got together because, in spite of their day jobs – Rae is a realtor, Tennant a gold commissioner, handling claims – they couldn’t let go of the music.

“All three of us spent years trying to make a more prosperous career out of the music business,” says Elliott, “so we’re just making our own way in it now. I love singing, I love hearing their voices with me. So it’s not about anything now but the enjoyment of it. I’m not trying to get a record deal, I’m not trying to get anything except another chance to sing. It’s so much fun. We’re coming from a purer intent, I guess.”

The concert hopes to serve as a reminder to all of us that life is vulnerable and natural disasters can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone. But if "we take some time to help our fellow Man and lend our Helping Hands" we can make our world a little bit safer to live in despite all the natural disasters, wars and environmental catastrophes. THREE AWARD-WINNING SINGERS JOIN TOGETHER AS "AUGUST"

(Vancouver, BC) - Catch the Summer Wave with AUGUST All Year Round. A local group is catching the attention of summer worshippers around town with their feisty blend of entertainment. AUGUST combines three accomplished Greater Vancouver artists and singer/songwriters: Beverley Elliott, Rae Armour, and Meg Tennant. Sharing their songs of wit, wisdom, and womanhood, this musical trio proves that when AUGUST comes around, it’s time to kick back, relax, and enjoy the music.

The women of AUGUST are equally at home on the stage or on the back porch, combining the classic sounds of folk, country, bluegrass, and pop with their own original style and panache. With their sunny blend of harmony, humour, and timeless melodies they capture the essence of summer’s sweetness and light all year 'round.

Beverley Elliott the irrepressible redhead is originally from Ontario, but now makes her home in North Vancouver. Combining two careers of singing and acting, she has become a local favourite. Her song 'Are You Listening' won 1st prize in the BC Songwriters Association of Canada’s competition. Beverley is a regular performer at the 'Just Singing Around' songwriters showcase, and regularly acts on locally filmed television shows.

The charismatic Rae Armour began her music career with a popular rock band in her hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. After moving to Vancouver, she released an independent contemporary pop album, which garnered her double winner status of the Pacific Songwriters Association Write-On Awards. Her latest CD 'Next Move' can be purchased online at www.RaeArmourMusic.com. Throughout her career she has performed solo concerts on many international stages including as an opening act for Faith Hill in Whistler, B.C.

The Celtic beauty, Meg Tennant, was born in Sault Ste Marie and has been writing and singing since her high school days in Northern Ontario. From Toronto's cafes and coffeehouses to the west coast, Meg has delighted audiences. Her first CD 'Driving With You' reached the #1 position on the Folk/Roots chart at Village 900 in Victoria, and is currently receiving airplay on CBC across Canada.

Together at last, the women of AUGUST are performing all summer long at various venues including:

· Aug 11 - AUGUST is performing at the Helping Hands Concert in Whistler, B.C. on Friday August 11, 2006, located at the Millenium Place starting at 7.00 p.m.
· Aug 12 – AUGUST is at the Harmony Arts Festival, West Vancouver on August 12th at the Fountain Stage at 9:00 p.m. (by the Ferry Building Art Gallery & Pier, Ambleside Landing)
· Aug. 18-20 - Seabeck Festival, Seabeck, WA (Meg and Rae)
· September 7 - Rae Armour is at the Over 50's Gathering, Coast Plaza, 1:00 pm
· September 16 - Free ECK Concert in the Park, featuring Larry Siegel, Rae Armour and Meg Tennant. Saturday Sept 16th, Noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Omak Civic League Park in Omak, Washington, USA
· September 23 - ‘Shoulda Coulda Woulda' starring AUGUST and Linda Kidder in an outrageous musical theatre performance; at the Shadbolt Centre, Burnaby, 8:00 pm
· October 23-24 – AUGUST performs at Brock Tully’s Kindness Concert (TBA).

Review: August When Things Mature

(Merritt, B.C. ) - Vancouver's AUGUST performed at Merritt's Mountain Fest, the first artists on the program, setting the stage for the entire weekend, or as some would say: setting the consciousness.

The M.C. introduced AUGUST by saying 'It's all about the month of August when things mature. Please welcome AUGUST!'

AUGUST is composed of real women - nurturing women - who have seen the world and are able to sing about our trials, our breakups, our babies, our growing hips with humorous wit and a deep intelligence.

A few media people in the crowd recognized actor and singer Beverley Elliott. One comment was, "Where have you been Beverley? We've missed your singing!" Ms Elliott has been busy performing on film (TV's Godiva) and in theatre (Mom's The Word), among other venues.

The insightful songs by singer/songwriters and recording artists Rae Armour and Meg Tennant rounded out the performance with equal validation that yes, when AUGUST comes around we want to kick back, have fun and relax with these inspiring women!

With John Ellis on lead guitar and Linda Kidder on bass, AUGUST played to an appreciative crowd who braved the dusty winds like tough urban cowboys. Ms Elliott laughingly said, "Cowboy hats are rolling around like tumbling Tumble Weed."

Songs about heartache, grief, life, upliftment and love, and all sung with humour and conviviality! That's the women of AUGUST. Catch them again at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver on August 12 on the Fountain Stage, 9:00 p.m.
